Ode to the Mighty Mississippi Mosquito

Hail Mississippi State "Bird"!
Well, here it is in the third week of October in the Mid-South and the temps are still in the 80's. I've been back home in the Delta for over 65 days now and the mosquitoes especially out in the country side have gotten even more persistent in the days leading up to cooler fall weather.

Warm day by the ponds.
So everyday this week, I've been going out to our property out by Big Sand Creek with my Dad to check on the fruit trees, and check for various "nuisance" animals (such as nutrias, beavers, racoons, etc ...). So we go and sit out there for about an hour or so still hunting by the main pond. While I'm waiting I have to endured swarms and swarms of  mosquitoes with their "kamikaze" attacks on me.

Wearing double layers clothes and coverings.
I've gradually increased the amount of layers of clothes, wrapped a neckerchief around my neck, wore thick gloves and alternatively sprayed a 100% deet or natural repellant all over myself. And yet the mosquitoes are still finding enough exposed flesh to plunge their mouth (proboscis) into me! And on more than one occasion I was bitten thru my clothes and my gloves! I tried to outrun the mosquitoes down the levee road but a swarm of them escorted (chased) me all the way one end of the property to the other end.

Insect repellent

Who knew that the mosquitoes could be so bad this late in the year. I guess my saving grace is to either stay home or wait for the cold weather to come! Good thing the weatherman is predicting 40's and 30's degree nighttime temperatures this weekend!

Mosquito Candle
I certainly hope not to get West Nile Virus with all the bites that I've gotten both at home and in the country for the last two months!
